20 Questions with Johnny Jamison by Etienne Carignan

1.  Tell our readers about your history as a stylist
JJ: I have spent the last 31 years as a hairdresser. After completing both grad school and beauty college, I worked at a boutique for 10 months. While there I met a coworker Craig Campfield, who was a make up artist at the time. He told me about a friend of his - Tom Hayden, who was in the process of opening a salon [Tom is an internationally world-renowned stylist]. I worked for him for 4 years. This is where I learned business management, how to operate a salon efficiently, the retail side of the business, how to run a reception desk, and how to assist other stylists (co-workers).

2. After working for Tom Hayden for four years, is that when you opened Gossip?
JJ: I actually worked at another salon called Yehia & Co. prior to opening Gossip. It was there that I furthered my education. At Yehia, there was more of a focus on cutting hair and this is where I learned the round brush technique, when blow drying a client’s hair.

3. Tell us about Gossip, How long have you been in Oak Park?
JJ: We originally opened at 852 Madison. We were at that location for 15 years. We are now at 609 Madison, and have been for the past 11 years. I give my business partner Sue a lot of credit for the survival of the business.

4. How have you differentiated yourself as a stylist?
JJ: I have trained hairdressers throughout the country on styling and how to build customer base.  I’ve also competed in overseas Hair Olympics [twice] in Paris, Belgium, and Shanghai. I also did a 14 day tour in Africa where I led a seminar for stylists on cutting hair, hair styling and how to perfect various styling techniques. I think it’s fair to say that today I’m in the ‘twilight’ of my career now. But even after almost 31 years, I still enjoy it.

5. What can you tell our readers about Gossip Salon?
JJ: We are open 4 days a week vs. 6 days a week. We do this because we have very little demand on Mondays and Tuesdays. We are committed to using high end products. My rule of thumb is that ‘You’re only as good as the stuff you use.

6. So does that mean no 99 cents products?
JJ:  [Laughs] No, no 99 cents products are used here!

7. What do you do to remain a leader in the stylist world?
JJ: In terms of management, you READ – our greatest asset is books! I also read beauty journals, and view instructional DVDs from stylists in other regions and countries. Specialty classes are more useful (i.e., from an expert on color, hair cutting) to ensure you stay on top of your game. Honestly, you can learn from someone who just graduated from school. There’s always a new technique here and there you can pick up.

8. In terms of different skills, which would you say are the most important?
JJ: Color and Cutting is your ‘bread and butter’.

9: What propelled you along the way in your career?
JJ: Part of my motivation was self-gratification and financial gain. I’ve always had a competitive attitude; It was also about not wanting to be in middle or at the bottom of the pack. I guess you could say it comes down to personality and pride. Competing against other hairdressers nationally and internationally really helps determine where you are in terms of skill. I won the Silver in France and the Bronze in China.

10. Any other motivations besides the awards?
JJ: The quality of life you want to have plays a big part. You have to ask yourself the question, ‘Do I want to exist or live?’ I wanted to live, travel, and be able to give back. I’m just not able to settle for mediocrity.

11: How would you characterize the differences between stylists?
JJ: Well, like any other profession, lawyers, doctors, teachers – you have your novice, middle, and the leaders of the pack. It comes down to what you want from the industry. Some just want to get by. For those who have good mechanical skills, they work, those who have strong knowledge base teach. It’s very rare to have both. Being an expert at what you do is nothing more than pride. If you don’t take pride in what you do, it’s not professional.

12. What is your (Gossip’s) motto?
JJ: Quality service. We use high quality products. We are an upscale salon. We try to get clients in and out in a timely manner. Our focus is on SERVICE – we accommodate your needs from head to toe.

13. Which products do you recommend?
JJ: We use products based on performance and recommend those same products for clients to use at home. Paul Mitchell, Schwarzkopf, Wella, Joico (color, shampoo), Pravana (color), Mizani, Optimum. You can’t carry a whole beauty supply store,  so we give them a clear choice.

14. What do you think of the hairstyle trends we see today and their origin?
JJ: Community hairstylists, get their inspiration from ‘feel’ and creativity. ‘Street Hair’ sets the tone. They have the creativity, but not the technical know-how. Technical can show you step-by-step and perfect a technique. It's similar to hip hop gear that goes main street and shows up in Hollywood, but in a more refined version. Street stylists don’t have the image and expertise to take the looks to the next level. That requires someone with formal training. There’s not a lot of African-American hair being done on the international stylists scene. Our texture of hair allows you to conceal mistakes. You cannot do that with straight hair.

15. What is your opinion on what seem to be the most popular trends right now?
JJ: All have advantages, disadvantages. Glue-in weaves irritate the scalp, causes scalp disorder, itching, hair falls out, some will be allergic. If you're attending a family or high school reunion, it’s a quick addition for a fashionable look or a way to add length quickly. Sew-ins are a better option.  A lot of weave artists aren’t concerned about health of hair. You must shampoo and condition regularly to maintain the health of the hair. If you're wearing weave with intention of growing out your hair, you must allow 72 hours (3-4 days) for your hair to be in its natural state, so that it has a chance to grow. Natural hair is safest –  what you must determine is if you can put heat on it. Since 'Good Hair' (Chris Rock documentary) was released, there has been a decline in weaves – especially among celebrities. Wigs, Natural hair, straight hair – all are equally strong trends right now. Relaxers are most popular as natural manes are still in minority. Weave is the 2nd most popular.

16. Can you give our readers any hair care tips ? For example – on how to manage damaged hair.
JJ: 80-90% time, they need to come in on regular basis, but that’s typically not in their budget. I would recommend products they should use overnight - leave in conditioner for example. Contrary to popular belief, you need to wash your hair at least once a week. It would be like not washing your body regularly! The 2-3 weeks myth came from lack of know how, skill, and technique. Growing up, girls had their hair braided and packed full of grease. I had 6 sisters, so my mom had to do 6 girls hair once a week. A clean head of hair is a healthy head of hair. Ideally, you want them to come in on a regular (weekly) basis similar to a dentist or doctor so we can monitor the health of the hair.

17: Pricing, how can clients keep their spending in check?
JJ: Space out big ticket items (ie, haircut or relaxer) and prioritize instead of doing everything all at once. You must remember that pricing is based on 2 elements:
  1. skill set
  2. rent district of the salon
18. Where does Gossip rank with regards to pricing?
On a high to low scale, pricing – above average, an 8 on a scale of 1-10. 80% of salons in our area charge the same. Market research determines cost. Junior, Senior & Master stylists all have different price points. It would be unfair to the customer otherwise. So you charge less to justify skill set. Some clients want a basic service, and to others --image is everything.

19. Do you offer prepaid services?
Yes, based on dollar amount vs. a time period. If there’s $300 paid in advance, you automatically receive a $50 credit. We always provide clients with a receipt showing what you’ve spent thus far. For $600 paid, receive a $100 credit; pay $1000 upfront, and receive $250; $1500 paid upfront receives a $300 credit. The more you prepay, the better the incentive.

20: Favorite Ice cream flavor?
JJ: Vanilla
SP: Ahh, you’re a simple man. [Laughs]
Thank you so much for your time.

We visited the folks over at Sir Spa in the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago to get some valuable Men's Grooming tips...just in time for Father's Day!

Ashley, one of two lovely managers at Sir Spa gave me a tour of the facilities at the spa known for its impeccable catering to the male species. In business since 2006, Sir Spa offers 7 treatment rooms, and is equipped with a steam room, locker room and an ultra relaxing rainforest shower for guests. Sir Spa is also Handicap accessible; there is a lift to accommodate guests. The locker room is equipped with razors, sandals, towels, and  blow dryers. In the waiting area, guests will find water (usually infused with fruit), tea, coffee, wine, and beer.

Services and amenities include skin treatments, a special suite for female guests, the ever popular Date Night package which includes:

  • Two 60 min massages
  • Beer/wine
  • Dinner discount with 1 of 5 local restaurants

All for just $150!!!
The typical client is approximately 35-year old professional male who resides in the city of Chicago.
One of the new additions is the barber area, where clients can get a haircut and/or manicure, etc.

What sets you apart?
The look & design of our facilities is geared towards men -- as evidenced by the dark wood floors, leather chairs, etc. We definitely have the 'Man Cave' look! Unlike some spas, the environment here is still inviting, not sterile, and we accept female guests. Also, most of the staff has been here for years, which is great for our guests because it allows them to establish working relationships which adds value to the overall experience.

Is this your only location?
Yes, this is our only location for now, as we currently have no plans to expand.

Why should men invest in spa treatments?
It takes you out of your element - to a relaxing place to focus on you. It's a very zen-like, relaxing experience. Treatments such as facials are important for guys too. Maintaining healthy skin and complexion is good for their health,  and also helps blood circulation which is important.

Sir Spa answers Questions from our Facebook fans!
Q: Is it okay to reuse disposable razors?
A: Yes, after sanitizing with alcohol or barbicide. To do this properly, soak the razor for 5-10 minutes, and let dry. As a general rule, however, a disposable razor should be used no more 3 times.

Q: How can I prevent bumps after shaving?
A: Use high quality products when shaving. We recommend the Art of Shaving, 3 step product line with post shave treatment (balm).

Q: What should I use to prevent and treat razor burn?
A: We recommend Jack Black shave cream for razor burn.

**Special offers**
- New guests receive $25 off treatments of 60 mins or more
- Father's Day Special --> 20% off all gift card purchases until June 19

This was informative. Not sure how the flavor of ice cream tied in but good humor anyway is always good. Glad to see a list of products that stylist like to use. There are so many out there so to hear a recommendation of one that was actually used is good.
